Biology GCSE

Homemind Academy follows English school curriculum, covering a range of subjects to prepare students for A Level exams.

 

cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Biology helps learners to understand the biological world in which they live and take an informed interest in science and scientific developments. The syllabus includes the basic principles and concepts that are fundamental to the subject, some current applications of biology, and a strong emphasis on practical skills.

Learners also develop an understanding of the scientific skills essential for progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level, further education or a career related to science.

This syllabus is graded from 9 to 1 but is otherwise the same as Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610).

Why choose this syllabus?

The aims describe the purposes of a course based on this syllabus.

You can deliver some of the aims using suitable local, international or historical examples and applications, or through collaborative practical work.
The aims are to enable students to:

  • acquire scientific knowledge and understanding of scientific theories and practice
  • develop a range of experimental skills, including handling variables and working safely
  • use scientific data and evidence to solve problems and discuss the limitations of scientific methods
  • communicate effectively and clearly, using scientific terminology, notation and conventions
  • understand that the application of scientific knowledge can benefit people and the environment
  • enjoy science and develop an informed interest in scientific matters which support further study.

  18. Variation and selection
  19. Organisms and their environment
  20. Human influences on ecosystems
  21. Biotechnology and genetic modification

You don’t need any previous qualifications to study this International GCSE course.

2 Years  (130 guided learning hours )

Students are required to arrange and pay for their GCSE examinations. Students must check the relevant examination board website for further information and final examination sitting dates for the specification.

All examinations are held during the May / June  and Oct/Nov of each year.

Some students will study for the exam over a period of months or years, as they dictate their own study schedule. We do however have students who will study intensively and prepare in a matter of weeks. You are only constrained by the exam diet.

All of your lessons and assessments are available on our Moodle-based learning environment.

You can learn the course in a linear pathway or choose to jump to the section that you need. Your learning is completely flexible and allows you to set your programme of learning around the skills you need.
